The remote radar heads (RRHs) at Buchan and Benbecula will undergo an upgrade which will help minimise the effects of wind turbines on the installations.
Reported by the Press & Journal, the upgrade has been funded by wind developers and will consist of installing a Lockheed Martin TPS-77 radar at the two locations.
Buchan and Benbecula Radar Upgrade
Both the RRH at Buchan (Aberdeenshire) and Benbecula (Outer Hebrides) are important to air defence. They input into the UK Air Surveillance And Control System (ASACS).
Other ASACS radar have already began to be upgraded to the TPS-77 technology resulting from funding from the wind industry. Namely these are Trimingham (North Norfolk), Brizlee Wood (Northumberland) and Staxton Wold (North Yorkshire).
The cost for the Buchan and Benbecula radar upgrade has not been revealed.
