March 18, 2024 Hannah McNaul

Earlier this month, on the 5th and 6th March 2024, The Global Clean Cities Expo (GCCE) was held at the Millenium Plaza Downtown in Dubai. Industry professionals from the United Arab Emirates and across the world gathered to discuss urban sustainability and innovative solutions.

Day 1

The first day of the conference focussed on key topics of sustainable urban development, including waste management, sustainable transportation and the future of solar energy.

This provided an exciting opportunity to become further educated in other sectors of the renewable industry and understand how energy policies are changing within the UAE to promote greener urbanisation. Representatives from government departments, such as the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Department of Municipalities and Transport gave talks on the issues that are currently faced in the UAE and provided suggestions on how these should be addressed. Product specific companies then had the opportunity to share their new ventures and the research that is being undertaken to influence these sectors.

Day 2

The second and final day of the conference concentrated on water treatment solutions, sustainable urban transformation, net-zero buildings and smart food waste.

Companies such as Masdar City attended the conference and shared their visions for cleaner cities. Masdar City has developed an environmentally conscious community and hopes to pave the way for global cities of the future. The city is located in Abu Dhabi and currently has plans for three buildings that aim to achieve the Zero Energy Certification – a globally recognised certification as one of the highest standards of energy performance. In addition to this, Masdar City has incorporated a plethora of renewable solutions through design, such as recycled building materials, solar PV areas and creating a pedestrian-friendly city.

Concluding Remarks

Overall, the GCCE addressed the significant environmental challenges facing urbanisation in one of the most developed cities in the world. Attendees shared valuable insights into innovative solutions that will change the future of sustainable development and it is exciting to see how this will unfold.
