Until now, if excess renewable energy was generated the UK and Ireland could only sell it in their own individual countries. This has now changed thanks to the recent opening of a 500MW capacity undersea cable, which provides an electrical link between the two.
The East-West Interconnetor, as it is called, enables for two way purchasing of electricity and improves the energy security of the two countries. This is especially good news for the UK as Ed Davey MP – UK Secretary of Staet for Energy and Climate Change – expressed that Ireland was one of the EU countries expected to generate a surplus of renewable energy than needed to meet it’s green targets. A surplus that the UK can now buy and put to good use.
