COP28 Coming Soon!

COP28 Coming Soon!
October 31, 2023 Waqar Qureshi

The COP28 climate summit will soon be taking place between Thursday Nov 30th and Tuesday 12th December 2023. This is the 28th such conference, held annually since the first summit in Berlin in 1995. It is a formal meeting of countries that are members of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to discuss climate change and assess progress with respect to global targets.

This year the summit will be held at the Expo City in Dubai. The president of the summit, Sultan Al Jaber, presented his plan of action at a meeting in Brussels earlier this year [1]. This mainly referred to the 2015 Paris Agreement, divided into four goals which were divided by Al Jaber into a structure that he catchily called “the four pillars” or “four F’s”:

  1. Fast-tracking the transition to a low-CO2 world;
  2. Fixing climate finance;
  3. Focusing on people, lives and livelihoods; and
  4. Full inclusivity.

Since then, Al Jaber in coordination with two renewable energy organisations (the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Global Renewables Alliance) has urged the tripling of renewable energy capacity by 2030 [2]. This is specifically aimed to stop global warming exceeding the 1.5 degrees Celsius ceiling that was agreed in the 2015 Paris Agreement, and would require renewable energy capacity to reach more than 11,000 GW by 2030.
