Celebrating Pager Power’s Pets on National Pet Day 2025

According to UK Pet Food (formerly the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association), 3.2 million UK households have welcomed a pet since 2020. Research consistently shows that pet interactions can positively impact human health and well-being, mainly through the attachment and companionship they offer [1].

Below are some photographs of the pets that keep the Pager Power team busy at home. Some of these furry friends have come and gone from our homes over time. Below (from left to right) we have Tori’s Princess Peach, Hannah McNaul’s Winston, Phillip’s Bib, Danny’s Nala and Tigs, Hannah Lucey’s Mya and Percy, Georgia’s Oreo and Twix, Kai’s Gamble, Mike’s Jack and Cato, Gabby’s Aslan, Hannah Marshallsay’s Roux, Aaron’s Maple, Rosie’s Chilli and Harry’s Lysistrata. You may occasionally see our pets trying to make their presence known during Teams calls.

Of course, we also have our office dog, Bruce (top left), whose regular presence is always warmly welcomed. The Pager Power office feels like his second home, as he has been visiting since 2023. You can read all about Bruce’s first introduction to our office here.

History of National Pet Day

In 1973, the Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International) estimated that approximately 13 million dogs and cats entered shelters across the US yearly, including strays and pets surrendered by their owners. In the US today, that number has decreased, but approximately 6.5 million companion animals are still sheltered annually, with 1.6 million cats and 1.6 million dogs finding their forever homes [2].

National Pet Day was founded in 2006 by animal welfare advocate and pet expert Colleen Paige. She aimed to raise awareness about the millions of animals in shelters awaiting adoption. Colleen’s initiative encourages potential pet owners to consider adopting from rescue organisations rather than purchasing from breeders, promoting the powerful message: “Don’t shop! Adopt!” [2].

What began as a cause in the US has since spread globally, with National Pet Day now celebrated in countries such as the UK, Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Spain. Notable celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Willie Nelson, and Ricky Gervais, have supported the cause [2].

Emotional Benefits of Owning a Pet

A 2024 report from UK Pet Food highlights the emotional rewards of pet ownership, with many pet owners recognising their pets’ positive impact on their mental well-being. Approximately one-quarter of pet owners report spending more time with their pets than with family members. Furthermore, 39% of pet owners believe their pets contribute positively to their family’s mental health. For many individuals, pets are a critical source of companionship, with nearly half of those aged 45 and older stating they would feel lonely without their pets. One-fifth of pet owners believe pets should be available on prescription for those struggling with loneliness or mental health challenges [1].

Since 2020, research into human-animal relationships has gained momentum, particularly regarding social restrictions. Studies exploring the role of companion animals in mental health during this time suggest that pets helped many people cope with isolation and stress. However, it’s important to note that these findings may not be universal, as research has primarily focused on specific populations, including the general public, children, and older adults [3].
