Feline Happiness and Sustainability: Small Changes That Make a Difference

Here at Pager Power, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Whether we’re supporting renewable energy projects for wind and solar farms or finding ways to reduce our own impact, we’re passionate about making choices that benefit the planet. But sustainability doesn’t have to stop when the working day ends, it can continue at home too.

After recently adopting my cat Basil, I quickly discovered two things. Firstly, the range of cat toys in many pet stores can be surprisingly limited. Secondly, just how many simple, sustainable alternatives cats seem to enjoy just as much – if not more!

Small Swaps That Make a Difference

Making sustainable choices doesn’t mean completely changing the way you care for your cat. Small swaps can make a real difference over time. Choosing toys made from natural materials such as cork, hemp or wool over plastic can help reduce waste and often proves more durable. Instead of replacing scratching posts when they become worn, these can be rewrapped with natural sisal rope to give them a new lease of life. 

As I’m sure many of you know, cats have an amazing ability to remind us that entertainment doesn’t need to be expensive. Looking after our cats sustainably isn’t about never buying new products, it’s thoughtful choices and reusing what we have readily available. Turning cardboard boxes into hiding places and climbing opportunities, toilet roll tubes into treat puzzles or old towels into cosy sleeping spots.

Eco-Friendly Choices Beyond Playtime

There are plenty of eco-friendly choices beyond playtime too. When it comes to feeding, buying food in larger packs and choosing products with recyclable packaging can help minimise waste even further. Cardboard scratchers made from recycled materials, stainless-steel food bowls and sustainably sourced wood pellet or recycled paper litter can all help reduce waste.

A little creativity can save money, reduce waste and provide just as much happiness for your feline companion. Sometimes the greatest reminder to live more sustainably comes from the smallest member of the household – the cat happily curled up in yesterday’s delivery box.
