Many of us recall the “Digital Switchover,” during which existing analogue television signals in the UK were replaced with new digital transmissions between 2007 and 2012. However, as time and technology continue to advance, another similar upgrade is now underway.

Why Is 3G Being Phased Out?

3G (or third generation) mobile signals are being phased out in the UK [2] in favour of the existing 4G, and new 5G, systems. 3G is used by fewer new phones and provides slower services than the later generations. Of the four main UK network providers (EE, Three, Virgin Media O2, and Vodafone), all but one have already shut down their 3G networks [3, 4, 5], with Virgin Media planning to begin their switch off in April of this year [6].

The motivation to move away from 3G is partly financial. The older infrastructure is becoming increasingly expensive, and its returns are diminishing as fewer users utilise the network. Instead, many people are opting for 4G and 5G due to their greater speed and reliability.

The Rise of 4G and 5G

4G is the modern standard for mobile data services, with 5G coverage expanding nationwide. 5G services are available in two forms:

  • Non-standalone 5G, which uses elements of the 4G network to supply improved reception and speed above the potential of 4G; and,
  • Standalone 5G, which uses new purpose-built technology and transmitters.

If you’re considering upgrading your devices and want to check whether 5G reception is available at your home or workplace, each primary carrier provides coverage maps. You can enter your postcode to see their current network coverage in your area.

If concerns regarding mobile phone reception have been raised for a development project, such as a tower block of new residential flats, it may be necessary to conduct a survey of the existing reception. This survey is typically carried out near the completion of construction using a specialised signal analyser. This handheld device can read and measure signals from all available networks and provide detailed reports on their quality.

About Pager Power

Pager Power offers surveying services across the UK and has recently upgraded its signal analyser to measure 5G coverage, in addition to existing services such as 4G. This enhancement allows for the most detailed and up-to-date surveys available. If you are seeking an expert consultant to carry out a survey for your project, please get in touch, and we will be pleased to assist you.
