With onshore wind making a resurgence across the UK, we thought it would be a good time to reflect upon and analyse the aviation issues that the industry faces in 2024 for both the UK and international markets. We also want to refresh the memories of those who are now returning to the onshore wind market after a few years away and to inform those who are completely new to it. Aviation impacts are a serious consideration that can prevent an onshore wind farm from receiving planning permission – it is therefore important that those within the industry are aware of the key aviation issues that may lead to an objection to a wind development, both in the UK and internationally.
What Does the Guide Cover?
Pager Power’s guide discusses seven key issues that wind developments face with respect to aviation, including radar, instrument flight procedures and aviation lighting, to name a few. A key factor in the future of onshore wind is the size of the wind turbines that are now being proposed. Ten years ago, the de facto maximum tip height was 125 metres above ground level, however in 2024, heights ranging from 150 to 250 metres+ are now common, and this has wide-reaching implications for aviation impacts. It is likely that any new or repowered wind development will face some kind of aviation objection, and these must be carefully managed to give a developer the maximum chance of planning success.
