London’s Largest Rooftop Solar Scheme at New Spitalfields Market

A rooftop solar scheme capable of generating a 1.4 megawatt-peak has been installed at New Spitalfields Market in Walthamstow, making it London’s largest operational rooftop solar scheme by generation.

The new installation features 2,730 solar panels installed across the roof of the market, capable of a 1.4MWp (megawatt-peak, the maximum power output under ideal conditions). The scheme is anticipated to generate around 1.27 gigawatt-hours of electricity every year. [1]
The Chairman of the City of London Corporation Markets Board, Mark Wheatley, has outlined the importance of the £1 million investment by recognising it is to help “ensure the market remains a modern, efficient and well-equipped facility, supporting traders and customers while strengthening its long-term future.” Chris Hayward, Policy Chairman at the City of London Corporation, added that “this project demonstrates the value of investing in local renewable energy generation.” [2]
Net-Zero by 2030
This project forms part of London’s greater goal to become net-zero by 2030. The scheme is forecast to cut carbon emissions by around 225 tonnes a year [2]. With New Spitalfields Market operating throughout the day and night, the market has constant requirements to support refrigeration, lighting, and operations. The rooftop solar scheme reduces the market’s reliance on grid power [3].
