Premier League Committed to Sustainability Strategy

As industries continue to adapt to help combat climate change, the premier league is no exception as they have implemented a sustainability strategy which is designed to reduce emissions, future proof its operations to ensure its longevity and use the premier leagues huge audience to help inspire large scale change.
Why is it important?
As football operates on a huge global scale. Its environmental impact is significant especially in the premier league with stadiums requiring significant energy and players, staff and supporters travelling up and down the country weekly for fixtures. Therefore, the premier league is in a position to inspire positive change by leading by example and making its huge audience aware of the negative effects of climate change and how it can be reversed.

What is being implemented?
The premier league have decided to implement a three strategic priorities:
- Adapting the business – The premier league have stated that there goal is to be Net zero by 2040. In order to achieve this target environmental sustainability is to be embedded into its business and decision making processes, alongside reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving resource efficiency and protecting biodiversity.
- Future proofing the game – In order to ensure that the premier league is continuously improving its sustainability in the long term. Consistency across all men and woman’s clubs is key. In order for this to happen the premier league aimed to ensure that all clubs had a robust environmental policy by the end of the 2024/25 season and that all clubs develop a greenhouse gas emission dataset by the end of the 2025/26 season. They will also aim to help all clubs implement more energy efficient upgrades such as implementing LED floodlights. This will be achieved through the use of the premier league stadium fund. Which will provide capital grants to implement these upgrades across the National league system and the women’s football pyramid.
- Engage and inspire – The premier league aims to inspire positive behavior change and to raise awareness of environmental issues across its huge global fan base.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the premier leagues plan to implement a sustainability strategy highlights how large organizations can adapt and be a positive influence when it comes to combating climate change by adapting and implementing sustainable plans for the future.
