After first unveiling plans in February 2024, Oxford United have been granted planning permission to proceed with plans that will result in their home ground becoming the first football stadium run entirely on renewable energy.

The Proposed Infrastructure
The main three factors [1] that will help achieve a sustainable and renewable energy-powered stadium are:
- A rooftop area of 3,500m2 for solar panels;
- An air-source heat pump; and
- Energy-efficient building fabric
It is estimated that these measures will reduce CO2 emissions by 80% per year, compared with gas boilers. Following this, Oxford United aim to halve their carbon emissions by 2030, and further achieving net-zero by 2040 [2].
Jon Clarke, Development Director at Oxford United, has said the new home ground “will be the most sustainable mid-sized sports venue in the country.” [2].
Additional Plans
The local biodiversity is also planned to increase by 20% (net gain) through proposed landscaping systems (such as trees, ponds and wildflower meadows), beehives and rain gardens [1].
More to Come
In similar footsteps of the sports industry aiming towards a carbon neutral and sustainable future, West Ham United recently installed solar panels at their London Stadium, which were up and running during the Novuna London Athletics Meet and generated enough power for all event days [3]. Oxford United look to create history with their all-electric stadium, which could inspire others to take steps towards a sustainable sport.
