Radar Impact Assessment

Independent radar assessments trusted worldwide to minimise objections, reduce risk, and accelerate your planning approval.

Why Radar Impact Assessment Matters

Radar systems are critical for air traffic control, defence surveillance, and weather monitoring. Large structures – especially wind turbines – can create reflections, clutter, or shadowing that degrade radar performance.

If these impacts aren’t addressed, planning applications risk statutory objections from civil aviation authorities, military stakeholders, or meteorological organisations, leading to delays, redesign costs, or refusal.

Radar impact assessments provide the trusted, technical evidence required to demonstrate compatibility or to agree mitigation with stakeholders.

What Our Radar Impact Assessment Provides

Pager Power uses bespoke in-house modelling software and analysis to evaluate how your development interacts with radar systems. This can include:

  • Line-of-sight analysis to determine whether the radar has direct visibility of proposed structures

  • Clutter and shadowing analysis to assess how turbines or other tall structures could generate radar returns or mask legitimate targets

  • False target and desensitisation effects for wind turbines, analysing how moving blades may mimic or obscure aircraft echoes

  • Signal strength and performance modelling to quantify the likely impact on detection ranges and accuracy

Our reports are clear and defensible, combining technical results with accessible visuals. Where risks are identified, we recommend tailored mitigation – such as turbine micro-siting, radar blanking, in-fill radar deployment, or technical upgrades – working collaboratively with radar operators and aviation consultees to achieve agreement.

Pager Power has helped us obtain planning permission across the UK

We first appointed Pager Power in 2004 to assess a number of wind farms in North East England resulting in objections being withdrawn by Newcastle Airport. The company has successfully helped us resolve NATS, Royal Airforce, telecommunications and minor airfield issues. Pager Power provides advice and technical analysis, are easy to talk to and deliver reports on time. Pager Power has helped us obtain planning permission across the UK including a range of onshore wind farms in North East England and Central Scotland.
