Wind farms and aviation have a long-standing history, be it due to impacts upon radar systems and navigation aids or as a collision risk. It is vital that you understand the aviation risks associated with your wind development early in your project timeline as they can prove costly and cause delays.
We have experience assessing these issues worldwide, so you can trust us to understand, explain and identify the best way forward for your wind development to ensure the best chance of planning success.
How do wind turbines affect aviation operations and infrastructure?
Wind turbines primarily affect aviation operations in two ways: 1) as a physical obstruction or 2) through interference to electromagnetic signals. The most common issue encountered is the impact of the rotating turbine blade upon radar signals. This rotation can be detected by radar, which is then subsequently viewed on an Air Traffic Controller’s screen as ‘clutter’. These impacts can lead to higher Air Traffic Controller workload, increased environmental impacts and increased safety risks. It is therefore essential you understand the possible aviation impact of your development to ensure they can be minimised or mitigated fully.
